More About Me
I felt like I fell in love for the first time when I found partner dancing in 2019. I grew up playing sports and have always loved movement of all types. I had even dabbled in different types of dance in my 20’s – 40’s (lyrical, ballet, modern, contra, zumba), but nothing really stuck until I found social dancing at a local ballroom studio. I had taken beginner ballroom classes before, but having a place to put what I learned into practice every week made all the difference. Plus, I finally found an instructor who really taught me how to follow. I threw myself into ballroom dancing that first year, and also experimented with salsa and Lindy Hop. But then Covid hit, and soon after, a concussion from a bicycle fall… the latter kept me from dancing for 2.5 years. I just returned in the fall of 2022. So, technically I’ve only been dancing for a total of 1.5 years. My dance teacher says I'm advanced bronze but sometimes I dance with Silver-level leads in Foxtrot and Waltz. I lack a lot in terms of training in anything but the basic footwork and patterns in most of the dances done in ballrooms. Nonetheless, my current dance partners say I’m a solid follow. I suspect that is because I’ve been so kinesthetically oriented my whole life -- I am fit and strong and at home in my body. The combination of my fast reflexes and proprioceptive sensitivity means I can usually respond well to patterns I haven’t experienced before if they are led well. I also played music growing up, so I think I have a better than average sense of rhythm. Lastly, I am comfortable with myself, so I am not afraid to make mistakes as I learn and welcome feedback from partners. Plus, I LOVE it and am committed to practicing, so I tend to learn fast. All that means that although I’m still a newbie to partner dancing, I think I’ve got the raw material to be a great dance partner. I LOVE partner dancing, like no other activity ever in my life. I love that dancing gives me a place to express myself in different ways, to expand who I am even. Meanwhile, I am also grateful that it gives me a sense of community and an opportunity for play in my life. But I also want it to fill the hole left by athletics and playing music – a place where I strive for excellence. I want dance to be that place, but without the risk of losing the fun and joy of it. And not just because I want to be better at it, but because I find the process of growing in something – anything, really – satisfying in itself.

I'm Looking For
I don’t feel any need to compete or perform (though I am not closed to either). I’m really just after that feeling of oneness and joy I get when I am really in sync with a partner. Ideally, I'd like to find one or more partners who want to practice either just together or in private lessons. Since I want to hone basic footwork, posture, styling, and partnering skills in all the ballroom dances, I am open to considering whatever focus you may have for practicing. To me, fit is more important than which dance(s) we work on. I'm a little torn between bringing my skill up on all the dances or going further on my favorites (Lindy & Foxtrot -- I LOVE jazz, especially big band era!). In my weekly private lessons, I'm working on the basics for Quickstep, V Waltz, Tango, & WCS. I hate sitting those out! I am most motivated to learn WCS next because of the creativity it allows -- for that reason, I would also really love a partner who will go outside the box with me, take risks, try new things, be playful, really have a conversation rather than just go through patterns. This doesn’t have to be all the same partner, of course, I’m just saying what I would enjoy. My life is already full, so a long commute to a partner (no matter how great a fit) is probably not realistic for me, but it’s still worth messaging me in case we could occasionally meet up at dance events that are midway between us. I am single so I am open to a romantic relationship as well, but it seems too much to hope for that I’d find someone who’s a great fit both romantically and dance-wise. So, my main goal is to find a practice partner here, but I’m also open to finding a romantic partner, in addition to just new social dance partners. Of course, died-and-gone-to-heaven applies if they all turn out to be the same person. :)
